Is there any one strategy that is better than others?
I have found through my placement and through substituting that one of the best ways to maintain order in the classroom is to be polite and friendly towards the students while maintaining the teacher/student relationship. If you continue to say please and thank you to your students, then they will respect you because it will be obvious that you respect them. Also, if you keep your voice level instead of yelling at them, then they will listen to you better and will be more likely to do what you have asked them to do. Do not be a dictator towards them or they will completely shut down and ignore you. Fear is not respect.
