This article discussed the idea of getting rid of middle schools. One side argued that the middle school grades should be kept with the elementary school grades, and therefore keeping the students in a more "safe/naive" environment. The other arguement was that the middle school grades should be grouped with the high school grades so that the students become acquainted with the "real world" quicker than if they were left to the elementary school grades.
I think that the middle school grades should be kept by themselves, whether some districts decide 5-8, 6-8, or just 7 and 8. The early adolescent years are very important and if the students are sheltered for too long, or rushed into the real world too early, they will not be given the chance to develop their minds while their bodies are also developing. Middle school is one of the biggest transitions in a persons life: transition from elementary to high school, from kid to teen, and from friends who were friends just cuz to friends who are friends because you share common interests and goals.
